Role Overview

The Credit Underwriter is responsible for evaluating retail credit applications to determine the risk profile of potential customers. This role involves analyzing credit bureau reports, calculating affordability metrics, verifying application details, and ultimately making sound approval or decline decisions. The ideal candidate possesses strong analytical skills, acute attention to detail, and the ability to balance CrediQ’s growth objectives with strict risk management guidelines to maintain a healthy loan portfolio.

Key Responsibilities

Credit Analysis & Decisioning

  • Review incoming consumer credit applications for Buy Now Pay Later (BNPL) and Hire Purchase agreements.
  • Calculate and evaluate key financial metrics, primarily the Debt Service Ratio (DSR), to assess customer affordability and capacity to repay.
  • Make clear, objective decisions (Approve, Decline, or Counter-Offer/Adjust Credit Limits) based on CrediQ’s internal credit policies, risk appetite, and scorecard guidelines.

Credit Bureau Investigations

  • Pull and interpret consumer credit reports from the national credit bureau.
  • Cross-reference bureau data with customer-provided information to identify discrepancies, undisclosed debts, or potential red flags.

Verification & Reference Checks

  • Conduct comprehensive background verification, including contacting employers to confirm job stability, income, and tenure.
  • Perform reference checks with personal or professional contacts provided by the applicant.
  • Verify identity documents, utility bills, and pay slips to ensure KYC (Know Your Customer) and AML (Anti-Money Laundering) compliance.

System Integration & Workflow Management

  • Accurately input, update, and manage applicant data within the Loan Origination System (LOS) and Decision Engine.
  • Ensure all underwriting decisions are heavily documented with clear rationales attached to the customer’s profile.

Risk Mitigation & Portfolio Quality

  • Identify and escalate suspected fraudulent applications or identity theft attempts.
  • Collaborate with the management team to provide feedback on credit scorecard performance and suggest adjustments to lending criteria based on market trends.

Qualifications & Experience

  • Education & Experience: Bachelor’s degree in Finance, Business Administration, Accounting, or a related field. Minimum 2–3 years of experience in credit underwriting, loan processing, or risk analysis within consumer lending, retail credit, or micro-finance.
  • Technical Skills: Deep understanding of credit bureau reports, DSR calculations, and income verification methods. Experience working with Loan Origination Systems (LOS) is highly preferred.
  • Regulatory Knowledge: Familiarity with local financial regulations, compliance standards, and Hire Purchase legislation.
  • Core Traits: Highly analytical with exceptional attention to detail. Strong decision-making skills and the ability to work efficiently under pressure to meet tight turnaround times (TAT) for waiting retail customers.

Key Performance Indicators (KPIs)

  • Turnaround Time (TAT): Average time taken to decision an application from the moment it enters the queue.
  • Decision Accuracy / First Payment Default Rate: The percentage of approved accounts that default on their first installment or fall into early delinquency.
  • Verification Accuracy: Zero compliance breaches regarding KYC and income verification protocols.

  • Exceptional attention to detail and accuracy, ensuring credit assessments, financial analyses, underwriting decisions, and customer records are completed with precision and in accordance with internal policies and regulatory requirements.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to engage professionally with customers, brokers, and stakeholders, clearly explain credit decisions, and build productive business relationships.
  • Excellent organizational and time-management abilities, effectively managing multiple credit applications and underwriting tasks while maintaining thorough documentation and meeting service-level expectations.
  • Proven ability to prioritize competing demands and meet performance targets, consistently delivering sound credit decisions within established turnaround times in a fast-paced environment.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, capable of evaluating financial information, assessing credit risk, identifying potential concerns, and recommending appropriate lending solutions that balance customer needs with risk management objectives.
